IP over WDM (IPoWDM) allows IP data to be directly transmitted over optical networks without needing multiple conversion layers. This simplifies network architecture, reduces latency and enhances efficiency by minimizing hardware requirements and energy consumption. Advances in miniaturization, power efficiency and modulation techniques have made high-performance coherent optics a key technology that enables flexible and efficient IPoWDM architectures.

In this session, Jim Zou will explore the evolution of high-performance pluggable optics and their role in enabling IPoWDM from DCI to metro networks.
